Menstrual hygiene · Tanzania

Helping girls go to school, with dignity.

Many girls from low-income families in Tanzania miss school every month simply because they lack menstrual hygiene products. The Binti Project changes that, with a reusable Binti kit (hygiene kit) and education that lets girls manage their period safely, confidently and sustainably.

The challenge

Why menstrual hygiene keeps girls out of school

Menstrual hygiene is a basic part of health, dignity and self-determination, a right every woman should have access to. Yet for many girls from low-income families in Tanzania, products are simply unavailable or unaffordable. The result: recurring absences that hold back their education and their future.

Menstruation, the most natural process of every woman. And still, today, it is surrounded by shame, taboo and a lack of education. Combined with poverty and missing infrastructure, this deepens the disadvantage girls already face.

up to 5school days a girl loses every single month during her period
  • ✕Missed lessons. Many girls skip school during their period; in some regions they are excluded from daily life altogether.
  • ✕Unhygienic substitutes. Unable to afford clean pads, girls resort to old rags or plant fibres.
  • ✕Nothing available. In rural areas especially, affordable hygiene products are almost impossible to find.
  • ✕Disposables don't work. Single-use pads are no sustainable solution for poor families, and harm the environment when not disposed of properly.
